Let’s talk tastings

For every bourbon out there, there are tasting notes. And for every bourbon out there, there are multiple tasting notes. There are those that are what I call “high end” that get into amazing detail with about 25 different flavors, or notes, they pick up in the nose, then how they graduate into the palate and the finish. While I appreciate those, picking up hints of wheat grass and over ripe strawberries is a level I haven’t achieved. I will tell you what I smell (the nose), what I taste (the palate) and what I taste after I swallow (the finish). I will rate those on a scale of 1 – 10 as well as a category I call “That’s cool”. This category will be things like if I think the bottle looks good on my bar, or if there is something in the bourbon that blows me away that I just can’t put my finger on. Maybe the price gives that particular bottle a great value, or the exact opposite. That kind of thing. There will be pros and cons of each tasting as well. REMEMBER: This is my barbarian nose and palate. Your results will more than likely differ, but then again, maybe they won’t and I will save you some money.

My tasting will be a standard two-ounce pour, neat, in a Glencairn glass. The bourbon will air for 2-5 minutes before I taste it. There may be times where I may feel a need to add water or an ice cube.

That simple. Again, YMMV on all of these. Just throwing my two cents out there and we will see what happens.
